3-year-old accidentally kills mother after finding ‘unsecured’ gun, SC cops say

A South Carolina mother was accidentally shot and killed after her 3-year-old found an “unsecured” gun, officials said.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office was called to a shooting on Wednesday, Sept. 21. At the scene on South Pine Street, officials reported finding a child, mother and grandmother.

The mother had been shot and rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She was identified as 33-year-old Cora Lyn Bush of Spartanburg, according to information deputies shared in conjunction with the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office.

“The grandmother was interviewed and her account of the incident confirmed both the evidence at the scene and the victim’s injury,” deputies wrote in a Facebook post. “While our investigation remains active, there is every indication that this incident resulted from the young child gaining access to an unsecured firearm, which caused the mother to be accidentally shot and later died in hospital.”

The shooting was reported at about 7:45 am and an autopsy was set for the following day.

“Please keep Ms. Bush’s family in your thoughts and prayers at this time of loss and grief,” officials wrote.
