In an interview with Sky News, taped on Friday, Archie’s mother Hollie Dance, from Southend, Essex, said she is “quite broken” and that the day had been “absolutely awful”.

She collapsed, saying, “For the last few weeks since April 7, I don’t think there’s been a day that really wasn’t terrible.”

Ms Dance added: “It has been very difficult. Despite the hard, strong face and appearance so far clear to the cameras, I am quite broken.”

Benefactors gather outside the hospital

Outside the Royal London Hospital, where the 12-year-old has been on a ventilator for more than 100 days, they laid flowers and lit candles.

Kerry Walton, a hairdresser from Archie’s hometown of Southend, laid a bouquet at the feet of the statue of Queen Alexandra, one of the hospital’s most famous benefactors.

“I have two children, ages seven and two, and I just can’t imagine how Archie’s parents must feel,” said Ms. Walton, 36. “As a mom, I can appreciate what Archie’s mom was trying to do – gain more time for her son. If it were me, I’d try to get home anywhere, even just a glimpse of it.”
