CWG 2022: Sudhir wins gold in men’s heavyweight para-powerlifting | News about Commonwealth Games

India’s Sudhir won a historic gold medal in men’s heavyweight para-powerlifting and also set a Commonwealth Games record with a total of 134.5 points. Sudhir lifted 208kg on his first attempt and then took the lead with his second lift of 212kg.

Sudhir, 27, a bronze medalist from the Asian Para Games, has a disability due to the effects of polio. He opened India’s para sports medal account in the ongoing CWG.

Ikechukwu Christian Obichukwu took the silver with 133.6 points, while Micky Yule took the bronze with 130.9 points.

Sudhir had won bronze in men under 88 kg with a best lift of 214 kg at the World Para Powerlifting Asia-Oceania Open Championship in South Korea in June.


Sudhir, who started powerlifting in Sonipat in 2013, has also qualified for Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games, which was postponed to next year.
