Dog stranded on Michigan island rescued and taken to shelter

CLARE COUNTY, Michigan (TSWT DETROIT) – Clare County Animal Shelter Says One Dog Was… stranded on a small island has been saved.

In an update on Facebook Thursday, officials say the dog, named Zaria, was taken to the shelter and examined. She has been given permission to begin her recovery process.

“She gets several small meals a day until her system can adjust. She’s been sleeping since she gained weight,” the post reads.

For weeks, officials were trying to rescue the dog after she went missing on Aug. 17.

Bob Dodson of Clare County Animal Control said he and another officer located the dog using a drone, but the dog continued to run away. At the time, Dodson said she was on the island for about 11 days.

They thought she was probably stranded after she slipped out of her collar, ran and then swam across the channel to the small island area in Cranberry Lake.
