Actress Evan Rachel Wood appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Thursday evening, to promote season 4 of Westworld and, while there, she also discussed Madonna’s role in the upcoming “Weird Al” Yankovic biopic, Bizarre: the story of Al Yankovic.
Wood said she was grateful to have played the “Queen of Pop” in a comedy rather than an actual Madonna biopic because she didn’t feel as much pressure. However, she is still “a little scared” of what Madonna will think of her performance.
Wood also shared that even though she completely turned into a material girl, she didn’t really get to sing as Madonna in the movie, which is a shame, because she makes a very good impression of Madonna.
Wood said that after filming the biopic, the director was surprised to learn that the actress could sing as Madonna, as she shared, “We had a karaoke night and I sang Madonna. and the director said, ‘Why didn’t I blackmail you in this movie?'”
Wood’s singing talents shouldn’t come as a complete surprise as she starred in the Oscar and Golden Globe nominated musical across the universe in 2007 as well as in 2019 Frozen II as Anna and Elsa’s mother, Queen Iduna. Wood is also one half of the Evan + Zane cover band, which she formed with Zane Carney in 2018.
Still, Fallon looked super impressed when Wood grabbed the mic and effortlessly performed Madonna’s hit “Material Girl,” before singing Alanis Morissette’s classic “You Oughta Know” and ending with a perfect Janis impression. Joplin singing “Piece of My Heart.”
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon broadcast weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on NBC.
