MUMBAI (Reuters) – India has recorded 17,336 new daily coronavirus infections, the health ministry said on Friday, the biggest one-day increase since Feb. 20, according to a Reuters tally.
India’s wealthiest state of Maharashtra recorded more than 5,200 new infections on Wednesday, state authorities said, including 2,479 from the financial capital of Mumbai.
Daily infections in India have been rising over the past month, and the number announced on Friday was a jump of more than 4,000 from Thursday’s 13,313.
The daily death toll from COVID-19 rose by 13, the ministry said, bringing the total death toll to 524,954.
