Landslides triggered by heavy rains in Jammu caused the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar section of NH 44 yesterday and today.
Heavy rains in the Union Territory of Jammu closed several roads including the Jammu-Srinagar highway due to landslides. In a traffic advisory, traffic police said a major landslide on the Jammu-Srinagar highway near the Dawal bridge in Samroli damaged a 100-125 meter section of the road along with other blockages reported near Morh Tunnel and Chashma Battery where restoration work was in progress. . The section of NH44 was closed on Wednesday, with police saying it would also remain closed on Thursday June 23. A video of the affected area on the national road revealed that a section of the road had almost completely disappeared along with a noticeable section of the mountainside.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, traffic police said: “Due to heavy rain across the whole of NH-44 and stone blasting at Panthyal and other locations, approximately 3,000 vehicles, HMVs and LMV, are blocked on NHW Tomorrow 22-06-2022 no fresh vehicles will be allowed from either side i.e. Jammu to Srinagar and vice versa Weather permitting , only blocked vehicles will be allowed to move to their destinations subject to road conditions conducive to traffic.
Other roads affected include Mughal Road which linked Shopian and Poonch-Rajouri districts and SSG Road (the Leh-Srinagar road) to Chini nalla due to a landslide.
In its latest traffic advisory, the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police said that weather and road conditions permitting, vehicular traffic on the Srinagar-Leh road on Thursday would be permitted for limited hours, the roads being closed after 6 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning. The Mughal road would also be open for limited traffic hours. Police have, however, advised people traveling to confirm road conditions with local traffic control units before travelling.
