Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) responded to being named by the 1/6 Committee as one of the members who sought a presidential pardon for his role in the coup with a leak in denial.
Gaetz tweeted after being nominated by Committee 1/6:
The January 6 Committee is an unconstitutional political spectacle. He is quickly losing the interest of the American people and is now resorting to federal law enforcement on political opponents.

Nothing Rep. Gaetz wrote in his tweet was true. The Committee has been deemed constitutional by many courts. the committee does not lose the interest of the American people. A recent poll found the percentage of Americans who think Trump should be prosecuted for 1/6 felony has risen since the hearings began, and federal law enforcement is coming after Gaetz in an investigation into child sex trafficking, nothing to do with his other potential crimes 1/6.
Matt Gaetz offered only deviation and illusion as an answer. According to accounts, Gaetz wanted an unprecedented blanket pardon that essentially spanned his entire life.
A person would not need such a pardon if he had not done many things that could be considered criminal. Somehow, Matt Gaetz’s freedom seems to be on borrowed time, and his whiny tweet was missing a key detail.
Rep. Gaetz has never denied asking for forgiveness.
