DETROITT — Tesla is recalling nearly 1.1 million vehicles in the US because the windows could pinch someone’s fingers when rolled up.

Tesla says in documents posted Thursday by U.S. safety agencies that the automatic window reversing system may not respond correctly after detecting an obstruction.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says this is a violation of federal safety standards for power windows. An online software update will solve the problem, Tesla says.

The recall affects certain Model 3 sedans from 2017 to 2022 and some Model Y SUVs from 2020 and 2021. Also included are some Model S sedans and Model X SUVs from 2021 and 2022.

Tesla discovered the problem during production testing in August. Owners will be notified by letter from 15 November. The company says in documents that vehicles in production have received the update from September 13.

According to the documents, Tesla was not aware of any warranty claims or injuries resulting from the issue on Sept. 16.
