Norfolk man charged with fatal shooting at Oyster Point Plaza; Police say road rage led to incident


A Norfolk man was charged Friday afternoon with a fatal shooting in the Oyster Point Plaza parking lot in Newport News.

Officers were dispatched to a shooting just before 1:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the plaza, which is located in the business district on the 300 block of Oyster Point Road near the Warwick Boulevard intersection.

Newport News police determined the incident was the result of road rage, according to a Saturday press release. Police said the incident started with two people driving in the roadway and ended in the Oyster Point parking lot.

A man with a gunshot wound died at the scene. The victim was identified as Crystal Mittelstadter, 51, of Newport News.

Police said the suspect in the incident remained at the scene and was taken to the Newport News Police Station for questioning. Subsequently, after speaking with witnesses, reviewing evidence and consulting with the Commonwealth Attorney, the police charged As-Siddiq Abdul-Aziz in connection with the shooting.

The 22-year-old Norfolk resident was arrested late Friday night and taken to Newport News City jail.
