Okinawa celebrates 77th anniversary of major WWII land battle

Okinawa on Thursday marked the 77th anniversary of the end of a major World War II land battle between Japanese and American troops, with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida the first Japanese leader in three years to attend the memorial service due to restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a peace statement, Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had evoked memories of the conflict in the prefecture while pledging to “continue efforts to abolish the nuclear weapons and renounce war, so that Okinawa will never again become a battlefield.”
