‘Overwatch’ won’t require you to manually open all your loot boxes before ‘Overwatch 2’

One thing that won’t budge from Surveillance at Monitor 2 is the loot box. The sequel will be free-to-play. There will be a new business model, which includes a seasonal battle pass, but loot boxes will not be involved.

Blizzard will reveal more details on how the cosmetics work ahead of launch on October 4. However, the team clarified a few points. Surveillance Business Manager and VP Jon Spector wrote in a Reddit Q&A that all of your Credits, Overwatch League Tokens, and Competitive Points will transfer to Overwatch 2. You’ll also keep any skins, voice lines, emotes, highlight intros, and sprays you’ve earned.

Here’s more good news: you won’t need to spend time dealing with all your unopened loot boxes. Blizzard will automatically open them all for you before the Monitor 2 launch. All content will be added to your account.

This is a relief, as I have hundreds of unopened loot boxes across my various accounts. The fact that the Surveillance the team takes care of them automatically isn’t too surprising. You earned or paid for loot boxes, and they were never going to just disappear and take all of their contents into the ether. Still, it’s good to have an official word on this front.
