Several Republican senators have broken with Trump and rejected his claims of release of documents.
Asked about Trump’s claim on TSWT News that he could simply declassify documents by thinking about it and there is no process for him to do that, Senate GOP Whip John Thune told TSWT there is a process for declassifying documents.
“And I think it should be adhered to and followed. And I think that should apply to anyone who has access to or deals with classified information,” Thune said.
sen. Thom Tillis, a two-term Republican from North Carolina who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told TSWT he believes there is a process that must be followed by a president to release the data.
“I believe there is a formal process that needs to be gone through, that needs to be gone through and documented,” Tillis said.
Senate Republicans Reject Trump’s Declassification Telepathy
On some level, Trump has finally crossed a line that some Senate Republicans will not follow. Handling American secrets is a matter of national security, and some Senate Republicans in key positions still take national security seriously.
From a political standpoint, these Republicans seem to see how dangerous Trump’s behavior can be for their party.
The main point that could motivate them is the traditional push-pull between the executive and legislature. Senators don’t want a president to have unilateral declassification powers because it weakens executive oversight.
Trump’s argument is nothing more than a claim of unconstitutional unrestricted executive power.
If the failed former president thought Senate Republicans would rush to defend him or work to keep him out of jail, he was totally wrong, as some top Senate Republicans show they are have no problem kicking Trump to the curb.
