Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Authority have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the accident.

Ray Bryant, chief operating officer for the Logan Emergency Management Authority, said it was not yet known what caused the helicopter to hit the ground.

One of the owners of the machine would have gone to the scene after the incident.

The Route 17 freeway is now closed approximately one mile from the crash site and is expected to remain closed for at least the next 24 hours.
