South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol went viral for his hot microphone response to President Biden’s comments at the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday.

Yoon, who took office in May, responded to Biden’s promise to increase the US contribution to the UN Global Fund, which would require congressional approval.

“How could Biden not lose face if these f-ers don’t make it in Congress?” Yoon asked his aides on a hot microphone on Wednesday, according to the South China Morning Post.

Biden has reiterated the topic of conversation that America has once again been respected on the global stage since his election in 2020.

Yoon’s comments have sparked concerns in his home country – strong US-Korean relations are crucial for mutual defense in the East Asian region.

“He didn’t speak publicly on stage, but casually, and while I don’t know who recorded it and how, I actually think it should be verified,” a South Korean official told reporters afterwards, Yonhap said.

“I think it is highly inappropriate to make a link between private remarks and diplomatic achievements,” the official added, citing criticism that Yoon had caused a diplomatic disaster. “It is very unfortunate that such talk is about a diplomatic disaster while he is doing everything he can to complete a demanding schedule in the national interest of the Republic of Korea.”

The armed forces of the United States, South Korea and Japan teamed up last month in a trilateral missile defense exercise — the first of its kind in years.

The exercises began on August 8 and ran through Sunday, marking the first formal collaboration of its kind since December 2017.

The exercise served to reassure the Allied nations of their individual and collective commitment to mutual defense. In particular, the cooperation between South Korea and Japan could serve to ease cultural tensions that have persisted in recent years.
