Saurav Ghosal made history on Wednesday by winning India’s first-ever singles medal in squash at the Commonwealth Games. The world No. 15 defeated England’s James Willstrop 11-6, 11-1, 11-4 in the bronze playoff match to complete the feat. It is worth noting that Ghosal was previously outplayed by New Zealander Paul Coll in the men’s singles semi-finals on Tuesday. While India made history with Ghosal’s bronze medal, it was the player’s second medal in the event’s history. He had won a mixed double silver with Dipika Pallikal in the 2018 edition which took place in Gold Coast, Australia.
Shortly after his win on Wednesday, Ghosal was seen in tears. The player began to cry as the crowd continued to applaud behind him.

“I’m very happy, it’s a historic day for Indian squash. To be able to do this against a player of this caliber is very special. I’m happy to have won this after all these years,” said Ghosal.
“This was one – a CWG singles medal – that was missing from my collection and I’ve played three CWGs before and to get through in my fourth attempt is even more special. I’ve had to wait so long,” he added. .
Ghosal, 35, took the first game quite comfortably against home favorite Willstrop and extended his dominance by winning the second game by a larger margin, putting him within a fair distance of script history.

He also won the third game without much difficulty.
