A Japanese court on Thursday ordered the state to pay a Brazilian man ¥100,000 ($734) in damages for injuries he suffered after being forcibly detained at an immigration center in Tokyo in 2018 .

The Tokyo District Court ruled that the physical restraint exercised by immigration officials on the detainee was unlawful. Andre Kussunoki, who was injured while resisting being moved to another immigration center, had sued the government, saying such action was unnecessary.
