Suspect in stolen car from Lumpkin shot himself while fleeing authorities in North Hall


Sept. 23 – A man suspected of stealing a car in Lumpkin County shot himself to death on Thursday, Sept. 22 after Hall County authorities tracked him into the woods off Hubert Stephens Road, authorities said.

Michael Lee Adams, 43, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman BJ Williams said Adams’ last known address is Ellijay, although the Sheriff’s Office isn’t sure where he last lived.

Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman BJ Williams said a stolen SUV was being looked for and the car was spotted by a camera that detects license plates. The Times has reached out to the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office for more information about the stolen car business.

A Hall County deputy began tracking the stolen SUV near Murrayville Park Thursday morning but lost track of it.

After searching the area, the sheriff’s deputy found the abandoned SUV at the end of Old Howser Mill Road, Williams said.

A K9 search team and other deputies were called to the area and began following the suspect on an ATV trail near a river, Williams said.

“Just as the K9 team approached, the suspect shot himself in the head,” Williams wrote in an email.

Deputies provided assistance and called 911, with Hall County medics at the scene.

Adams died in the hospital.

Search and rescue efforts closed off part of Hubert Stephens Road for about three hours on Thursday.
