Former President Trump has asked the Justice Department to seize state government voting machines as part of his campaign to void the 2020 election, former senior DOJ officials testified at the fifth hearing on Thursday. of the select committee of January 6.

Why is this important: Trump had repeatedly asked the DOJ to investigate election conspiracy theories, using various avenues to pressure him into doing his bidding. After senior officials refused to budge, he threatened to remove them from their posts.

What they say : “We hadn’t seen anything improper about the voting machines, and I told him that the real experts [at the Department of Homeland Security] had informed us, that they had looked into the matter and that there was nothing wrong with the voting machines,” former acting attorney general Jeff Rosen told the panel.

  • There was no factual basis or legal authority to seize machinery, he noted.
  • “The president was very agitated by the acting attorney general’s response,” said former acting deputy attorney general Richard Donoghue.
  • “He said, ‘People tell me I should just get rid of you two. I should just pull you out and put Jeff Clark in – maybe something will get done. Jeffrey Clark was an assistant attorney general who backed Trump’s voter fraud allegations.
  • “President Trump talks about seizing the voting machines… Claim after claim overturned. But the president didn’t care,” said Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.).
  • The next day, Chief of Staff Mark Meadows sent several emails to Rosen asking the DOJ to send Clark to Fulton County, Georgia to investigate the fraud allegations.
