New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and several other party MPs, including Shashi Tharoor, have been detained by Delhi police during a protest against the central government over price hikes and unemployment. Party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was also detained from outside the AICC headquarters in the national capital, where she had joined other leaders and workers in their agitation.

Speaking to the media before his detention, Gandhi said: “All Congress MPs marched to Rashtrapati Bhawan to raise the issue of inflation and price increases, but they are not allowing us to proceed from Vijay Chowk Our job is to address the issues of the people… Some MPs arrested, also beaten.”

Congress leader and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat was also detained by police and put on a bus along with other MPs.

“We tried to march to Rashtrapati Bhavan but the police stopped us. They say Sec 144 CrPC has been imposed and they are not allowing us to protest. All MPs will present themselves for arrest. We are trying to march forward. We are fighting for people’s problems,” Congresswoman Rajeev Shukla said.

Congressman Deepender Hooda claimed the government is destroying the future of the country’s youth. “We want to protest peacefully, but you can see how MPs are being held,” he added.

Earlier in the day, senior party leader P Chidambaram said the congressional MPs’ protest is over price hikes and the Agnipath plan launched by the central government in June.

“Price increases affect everyone. As a political party and as elected representatives, we are obliged to voice the grievances, burdens and fears of the people. This is what we do,” Chidambaram said.

The protest from Congress MPs was led by the party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi.

The congress will hold nationwide protests and will also block Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in the national capital ‘gherao’ against price hike, unemployment and GST increase on some key issues.

Rahul addressed the media before launching the protest, claiming that India is witnessing the “death of democracy” and that anyone who opposes the start of the dictatorship is “being brutally attacked”.

“We are witnessing the death of democracy. What India has built brick by brick, starting almost a century ago, is being destroyed before your very eyes,” he said.
